You might find the headline a little peculiar, but in so many ways that is the truth for the Palestinians – they can never do enough to please Israel as long as they live on their own land. We can only imagine the backroom dealings of the pro-Israeli and pro occupation predators that work tirelessly to maintain the status quo, the question on many people’s mind is will Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) stand firm in his bid for UN recognition of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders? And if he did then what will actually happen? Will that mean the loss of the right to return for the Palestinians that have been forced out of their land at gun point? And what would it mean for the Palestinians that are living inside Israel, with Israeli citizenship? Another important question – are the Palestinians’ themselves agreed to this approach? So many questions yet barely do we have any adequate answers to clear this mist of confusion.
Why is, for example, Jack Straw emboldened to such an extent that he has written to all 650 MP’s urging them to back this call? Astoundingly an Early Day Motion (EDM) has been set up and the text is something of an eye opener! It says “that Palestinian negotiators entered talks with Israel and offered substantial concessions; regrets that talks broke down because of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s refusal to extend even a partial freeze on illegal settlement-building”. It goes on to say “Palestinians have recognised Israel since 1993 despite Israel’s refusal to recognise a Palestinian state”.
Wow indeed – I had to check the URL to ensure that it was parliament.uk! But the best quote has to be, “122 countries with nearly 90 per cent. of the world’s population now recognised Palestine and even among Israelis 48 per cent. support recognition”.
We expect America to say whatever Israel wants and that’s fair enough after all America is controlled by them – but what’s the German’s issues? And why do they ask the Palestinians to negotiate further, whilst Israel has shown contempt for that process, as mentioned in the EDM above?
With Netanyahu’s Trojan horse of a statement, “I call on the president of the Palestinian Authority to open up direct negotiations in New York and that they resume in Jerusalem and in Ramallah”, many will wonder if Abu Mazen will have the fortitude to see this through.
HOLD ON! If you scroll a little further down the EDM you will find an amendment! For all those MP’s who could not withstand the Zionist love to sign up to the EDM as it was accepted so far by over 90 MP’s – they wrote their own version attacking Hamas!
I know this piece has just asked questions but I sense that’s how many people are feeling about this matter! All I know for sure at the moment is that Palestine is recognised as a state by 122 countries, and this includes countries like Brazil, China, India and Russia. And it seems that for it to achieve Full recognition it will need 2/3 Majority which is about 129 votes – 7 shy of what it has.
However, full UN recognition will be hampered by Israel, sorry America. That being the case Abu Mazen will probably go for an upgrade from an observer to a ‘non-member state status.’ Basically all the rights of full membership apart from voting, and since the UN is controlled by the likes of America – voting in the General Assembly is a waste of time anyway!
When Israel was created it was the Americans that voted first for its acceptance, and now that Palestine is up for recognition it will be the same America that veto’s it first! One just hopes Abu Mazen doesn’t cave in to the threat by Obama and put the vote on hold in exchange for more talks. There are signs that Abu Mazen has already caved in to America – the difference this time is people know what the Fatah led PA had been doing previously against its own people – Abu Mazen should stand firm and let history recall America’s role in the injustices towards the people of Palestine.
And here we’ve done a full circle – Palestinian Freedom…how long is a piece of string! One may argue, at least they will know what the string looks and feels like…hence progress of sorts.
Real progress will only happen when those nations that have been kept in the throes of dictatorship finally manage to build themselves a nation that is strong economically, militarily and with the support of its people. These nations then can pursue their own foreign policies with their own interests, instead of fulfilling others in exchange for a few dollars!
The whole of Israel is an occupying force, since its inception in 1947/48. Muslims should reject Abu Mazen and this UN farce of a resoultion. By accepting this resoultion we are saying that Israel can keep the land it occupied before 1967. This is unaccepatble.
Also the UN is the right hand of America, why are we seeking aid, help and support from institutions and countries who in orgin are the cause of the problem, do Muslims really believe that America and Britain want to help because they care about palestine or because they have strategic goals and interests in the region which they wish to fulfill?
